This session explores the conundrum of freedom of speech in schools without First Amendment protections. We’ll discuss strategies for building trust and positive relationships with school administration and pedagogical and mission-based arguments for student press freedoms.

Working with administrators who don’t understand
Student-led media provides the strongest protection for the school and the greatest learning for the students. Even in Hazelwood states it is the law, but some school administrators just don’t “get it.” This session discusses ways students can advance the cause of student-led journalism.

Campaign spotlights students’ work
that made a difference
SPRC members are reintroducing the Making a Difference campaign. This monthly posting will highlight students who have made a difference through their coverage. When your students create content that has a positive impact on your school or community, please fill out the submission form and we’ll tell you how to send your content. JEA Scholastic Press Rights Committee will post one or more packages a month on its website and promote them on social media.
